Day 1 of my adventurous project to make a functional suit of armor...I have made a bunch of chain mail but getting into scale mail I had to wrap my head around scale placement. These scales are 1080 heat treated steel, sit within 50 - 55rc hardness.

Thanks Ian aka [link] for the pointers getting started.

Nice! How did you do the patina? Did you make the scales?

These were heat treated 1080 high carbon, so the finish is oven finish from the tempering process...the description has the website url (you'll need to copy/paste) of who makes the scales, they make quality goods.

These ones ship like that, they're heat treated 1080 high carbon steel, 0.025" thick...not too different from what i've made knives from.
